The Master of Science in Nursing: Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with an Emphasis in Adult-Gerontology program prepares experienced registered nurses for the advanced nurse practitioner role. Learners explore scope of practice, the role of evidence- based practice and research, and realistic ethical and legal issues. Graduates are eligible for certification as Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners. The program provides separate courses for advanced health assessment, advanced pathophysiology, and advanced pharmacology. All clinical courses and experiences in the program emphasize clinical and diagnostic reasoning, and the diagnosis and management of diseases. Learners also practice procedural skill acquisition and prepare for prescribing pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments and management of adult and geriatric acute care patients, subacute patients, complex patients, and patients with exacerbations of chronic illness. Clinical experiences emphasize the physiological and psychosocial impact of acute and chronic illness on the patient, family, and community, and prepare the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the diagnosis and management of acute and life-threatening health problems. This program includes 750 hours of direct patient care in clinical practice with qualified preceptors and two separate on- campus experiences. A post-master's certificate program is available to those nurses who already have a Master of Science in Nursing degree.
