The program goal is to create potential future leaders of the medical device industry who will promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and commercialization of novel medical devices for global use. Since the inception of the program in 2013, MBID has grown to be a signature Professional Master’s program at Georgia Tech and gained international recognition across both academia and industry. Each cohort averages between 25-35 students. The program brings together students from diverse engineering and science backgrounds (including healthcare professionals) to work in multi-disciplinary teams develop new products for the medical industry. The curricula combines traditional in-class education with a project-based learning environment. Students are assembled into product development teams that will define an unmet clinical need then use a traditional Phase Gate development process to develop a medical device. Students employ standard operating procedures, work instructions, and template documents in the creation of a medical product that addresses their unmet clinical need. By the end of the program, each team will have a prototype, verification data, medical device files, a business plan, a financial model, a provisional patent application, and a draft grant application. The MBID faculty is composed of leaders from the medical device industry, practicing clinicians, and GT professors. This teaching team uses real-world methods and tools in the curriculum to simulate current practices in medical product development. The program operates in cohorts and only accepts applicants who can start in the Fall semester. The program graduates have been successfully placed in various roles within the medical device industry functions (such as R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Marketing, Regulatory, Clinical, Business Development, Project Management, Venture Capital, Sales, Product Management, etc.).
