Additional Curriculum Information

You select one core course depending on your area of focus. The minimum number of credit hours for the core is three, but you may complete one four-credit-hour course from the approved list. All other sections must meet the minimum credit-hour requirement. You can complete a portfolio or a thesis for your culminating experience. For the portfolio, you attend a series of seminars or webinars in the last semester of your program and complete a write-up describing how the content of the presentations relates to what you have learned in the program and how the current research and work in that area applies to your future goals. You are encouraged to attend a variety of seminars to learn about current research, current practices in the industry, and learn outside of the classroom. If a thesis is selected, an oral examination in defense of the thesis will be conducted by the student's advisory committee. A thesis advisor is required, and as a thesis student, you will be required to be an active participant in research in the first year of study. A thesis usually requires a continuing effort over two or three semesters. You have the option to complete an internship. If selected, you will complete a minimum of one credit hour and a maximum of three credit hours of EEE 684 Internship that may be applied to your Focus Area Electives and Research coursework. The credit hours for the Focus Area Electives and Research section depend on the culminating experience selected. If you complete a portfolio, then you will complete 18 credit hours. If you select a thesis, you will complete 12 hours of Focus Area Electives and Research coursework. The program requires a minimum of three credit hours of EEE 500-level courses. At most one EEE 590 Reading and Conference or FSE course may be used toward the program requirements, and no more than four EEE 591 courses. You should choose at least two courses outside the area of specialization. No more than six credit hours of 400-level coursework are allowed on your iPOS, which would count toward the overall limit of no more than four EEE 591 courses.
