SOC 577

Advanced Qualitative Methods

University of Arizona 3 credits Sociology, Sch of

Course Description

This seminar provides training in advanced qualitative methods and ties it to the academic writing and publication process in sociology. Because this course focuses on analyzing qualitative data and writing results, I recommend that students enter with at least a minimally-developed project. That project need not be from a previous UA qualitative sociology class; it could be an MA from elsewhere, a paper from a different class, or even a BA thesis. And if you don't have some existing qualitative data to work with, you can still learn how to use QDA software and do analysis, as I will provide you with data or point you toward documents or interview transcripts that you can use to practice. But to succeed in this course, you must have at least a basic familiarity with the literature relevant to your topic. You will work on your analysis, theorizing, and writing in segments and, by the end of the semester, you will produce a rough draft of a paper based on your research.
