Systems Thinking

University of Arizona 3 credits Social & Behavioral Sci Admin

Course Description

Every day we interact with systems, such as local and global food systems, waste management systems, and communication systems, as well as natural systems such as the water cycle and carbon cycle. Effectively designing and implementing resilience solutions depends on understanding the complex forces and interactions within and between systems, as well as leverage points for change. This course uses readings and other materials, individual and collaborative activities, and discussions to promote understanding of systems thinking and its application in environmental and community resilience. This course will use case studies from nature, organizations, industry, and communities to demonstrate, analyze, and practice systems-based solution design. Students will explore and practice key concepts in systems thinking and systems dynamics, including stocks and flows, feedback loops, dynamic and emergent behavior, and tipping points. By the end of this course, you will be able to apply principles of systems thinking to effectively describe a system's functions and dysfunctions, uncover opportunities, and affect change.
