PSC 628

Comparative Pol Institutions

University at Buffalo 3 credits Political Science

Course Description

This course investigates the origins, operation, and consequences of political institutions. Institutions are generally thought of as the “rules of the game” that gives order to politics, and within which leaders and citizens operate. Topics include theories of institutional formation and change, constitutions and the variety of democratic regimes, legislatures and government formation, electoral systems, political parties, bureaucracy, and the courts. While the class focuses on democratic institutions, we also consider the role played by institutions in non-democratic systems. Examples will be drawn from a range of countries and time periods.
