POL 301

Democratization

Stony Brook University 3 credits POL

Course Description

This course examines the process, causes, and consequences of democratization. It explores the core principles, theories, and conceptual tools that scholars have developed to understand the challenges of democracy and democratic transitions. Democratization has long been at the heart of comparative politics, and much of the fieldโ€™s classic scholarship has addressed the onset, survival, and consequences of democracy. The topic is inherently multifaceted, engaging economic, cultural, social, and psychological perspectives, and it has been studied across diverse geographic regions and political contexts. Using a broadly comparative methodology, this course will incorporate evidence from both developed and developing societies worldwide. Students will sharpen their understanding of democratic systems, the factors that promote democratization, and the processes through which democratic change unfolds. By analyzing key waves of democratization and the debates surrounding them, students will gain a deeper appreciation of the main insights in the democratization literature and will be equipped to design a professional-quality research project on democracy and democratization. 3 credits Prerequisite: U2 or higher standing Note: May not be taken for credit in addition to POL 390 , topic: Democratization.
