This course will introduce students to the mathematical formalism of quantum field theory as it is applied in the area of atom optics, mainly ultracold atomic gases. More specifically the class will present a framework for the various approaches (eg. macroscopic wave functions versus second quantization) to quantum many-particle systems and their properties, the goal being to deepen the student's theoretical appreciation and working knowledge of the variety of theoretical techniques that underpin the area. The broad range of experimental and theoretical concepts underlying atom optics are covered in the companion class OPTI 549 Atom Optics. Although it is anticipated that most students will take both OPTI 549 and 550 they are designed so that they may be taken in either order or in isolation.
