MATH 9002

Elliptic Curves

Temple University 3 credits MATH

Course Description

This course introduces students to elliptic curves. Basic experience with algebraic geometry will be helpful, but is not assumed. The course starts with an introduction to algebraic varieties, curves, and the geometry of elliptic curves over a general base field, assuming Riemann-Roch. After this, time is spent delving into the structure of elliptic curves over various fields, specifically the complex numbers, the rational numbers, and finite fields. The course culminates in a proof of the Mordell-Weil Theorem, which assumes the two major finiteness theorems from MATH 9001.
