Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar

University at Buffalo 3 credits Linguistics

Course Description

The goal of the proposed course is to offer an introduction to Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG), a formal theory of grammar based on the notion of constraint satisfaction. A grammar is viewed simply a set of declarative constraints ( about phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics) that specifies how linguistic entities relate to each other. Because HPSG is a precise and well-defined linguistic framework, it has been used in large-scale computational grammar development. This course focuses on the historical background of HPSG, its mathematical foundations, linguistic analysis, and critical assessment of current research.
