Indigenous Geographies

University at Buffalo 3 credits Indigenous Studies

Course Description

This seminar will focus on the geographic concepts and genealogies at the heart of current scholarship within critical Indigenous Studies. The readings and class discussions will engage themes of land and property, spatial techniques of colonialism, Indigenous spatial practice, refusal, and re-mapping, while centering various Indigenous perspectives on place, space, and land. In a historically colonial field, what are the possibilities of a Geography informed by Indigenous and Anti-Colonial ethics and onto-epistemologies? How has colonial power shaped spatial techniques such as cartography, the modular nation-state, frontiers, and borders? What are the spatial dynamics of concepts such as “settler colonialism,” “Indigeneity” or “the reservation”?
