HPD 602

Advanced Research Process

Stony Brook University 3 credits HPD

Course Description

This course provides a robust survey of the science of research methods relevant to the public health profession. Grounded in an initial overview of the philosophy of science, students will work independently and collaboratively to learn the process and skills to plan and conduct a primary research study. This includes how to formulate a focused research question and a concise hypothesis or set of hypotheses; conduct an appropriate literature search (including efficient use of library resources); critically appraise and rapidly synthesize peer-reviewed observational and experimental research to identify gaps in the evidence; and develop a rigorous written proposal for a primary research study (including a plan for the ethical conduct of research; participant recruitment and sampling; data collection; measurement considerations such as questionnaires and interviews; data analysis; interpretation of research findings; and knowledge dissemination). The goal is to equip students with the knowledge to discern which research designs and related methods commonly used in public health are applicable and appropriate to a research question of interest to them and of consequence to society and population health. 3 credits Grading Letter graded (A, A-, B+, etc.)
