Tectonic Environment

Stony Brook University 3 credits ESS

Course Description

ESS 542 explores the tectonic and geophysical processes that shape Earth’s crust, interior, and surface environment, using New York State as a regional framework for understanding global Earth systems. Students interpret geological maps and modern geophysical and Earth-observation datasets to investigate Earth structure, seismic waves, faults and earthquakes, heat flow, plate tectonics, tectonic geomorphology, volcanic and tectonic influences on climate, glaciation, and landscape evolution. Instruction combines lectures with hands-on physical experiments, computational analysis, and physical and digital modeling. Emphasis is placed on connecting scientific observations to evidence-based interpretations and communicating contemporary Earth science events, hazards, and processes to educational and public audiences. A research project is required. This course is intended for science teachers and science education students. 3 credits Grading Letter graded (A, A-, B+, etc.)
