Advanced Remote Sensing

University at Buffalo 3 credits Geology

Course Description

Remote sensing is both an art and a science that utilizes electromagnetic radiation to map and monitor the Earth’s surface, hydrosphere, and atmosphere, as well as those of other planets. This course offers a comprehensive overview of various remote sensing methods, including multi- and hyperspectral imaging, LIDAR, photogrammetry, and InSAR. After reviewing fundamental physics and sensor principles, as well as the basics of image processing, interpolation, and visualization, the focus will shift to advanced remote sensing techniques. Topics covered will include methods for interpreting multi- and hyperspectral images, as well as surface reconstruction and change detection using LIDAR, photogrammetry, and InSAR. Additionally, students will be introduced to using tablets for field data collection and differential GPS for precise, geodetic-quality positioning. The course will incorporate a variety of commercial, open-source, and web-based software through hands-on lab exercises. The curriculum is designed to provide a broad overview of applications, ranging from mineral exploration and geological mapping to monitoring environmental and vegetation changes. While the course is most effective when taken after the Environmental Remote Sensing (GLY565) course, it can also be taken independently as a standalone remote sensing course.
