DES 5652

Comics: Sequential Narratives

Temple University 3 credits DES

Course Description

In this hands-on studio course, we will explore the expressive potential of comics as well as the technical aspects of comic creation. Scott McCloud's seminal book, Understanding Comics, defines this artform as, "Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer." This broad definition encapsulates both the history of comics as we know them and its potential to continue pushing into new conceptual and aesthetic territory. This course welcomes those who have a personal tie to comics as fans and readers, and it welcomes those who, without that nostalgic tie, simply want to explore the format as a unique vehicle for short and long format visual narratives. It is a space for artists, designers, illustrators, writers, filmmakers, animators or others interested in creating comics.
