Misinformation & Society

University at Buffalo 3 credits Communication

Course Description

The information age had been heralded for its connectivity, diversity, and accessibility. But what began as a utopian promised land that could democratize media and data, turned out to be, at times, chaotic, dark, and misleading. Misinformation was not born with the Internet and social media. Instead, it had been casting its shadow on individuals and societies from time immemorial. But it had changed, and understanding the change is part of this class’s mission. Misinformation often serves as the basis for our beliefs, attitudes, intentions, and behaviors, many of which result in deleterious influence. We discuss the psychology of misinformation, its effects, and ways to correct it.
