BSC 448

Animal Behavior

The University of Alabama 3 credits BSC

Course Description

This course is designed to provide modern perspectives on the study of animal behavior, pulling from fields as diverse as evolutionary biology, ecology, psychology, neurobiology, economics, genomics, phylogenetics, and conservation biology. Throughout the course, there will be an historical undercurrent illustrating the roots of this truly interdisciplinary field. The course is structured to allow students to gain a basic understanding of topics ranging from sexual selection, anti-predator behavior, personalities, and aggression during lecture. Students then will have the opportunity to master some of the more important theories, concepts, and cutting-edge new hypotheses using active learning approaches, including the arts of reading and evaluating primary literature, critically dissecting experimental design, and working through intellectual problems in animal behavior. A student who does not write with the skill normally required of an upper-division student will not earn a passing grade, no matter how well the student performs in other areas of the course.
