Stony Brook University 3 credits BME
This course emphasizes the application of continuum mechanics to living tissues and organs in order to describe the material properties and their behavior under loading and stress. The interrelationship between biomechanics and physiology is examined in normal function and in disease processes. This course focuses on the physiology of tissue and organ systems in the context of mechanics, stress, strain, viscoelasticity and material behavior, and the constitutive equations and the field equations governing fluids and fluid flow, with an emphasis on the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems. Emphasis is placed on the utilization of engineering principles to analyze processes at the tissue and organ levels, covering soft and hard tissues and organs (blood, cardiovascular system, bone, cartilage, etc.) and to understand how these principles could be applied towards the design and development of prosthetic devices. 3 credits Grading Letter graded (A, A-, B+, etc.)
