ANTH 5196

Methods in Archaeological Science

Temple University 3 credits ANTH

Course Description

This course introduces students to the techniques and disciplines derived from so-called hard sciences that are used in conjunction with archaeology. Included in this survey are geological methods such as soil and sediment analysis; chronological methods such as radiometric and luminescence dating; macrobotanical, microbotanical, and zooarchaeological analysis; molecular and chemical methods; remote sensing methods; and other new methods as they are introduced. The range of contributions possible from interdisciplinary research will be explored in addition to how to design such research, how to communicate with specialists in other fields, and how to use existing sources of data to solve archaeological problems.
