ANTH 330

Development and Underdevelopment

University of Delaware 3 credits ANTH

Course Description

Examines how economic development and globalization significantly shape societies and cultures around the world. Emphasizes complex relationships of influence and exploitation between so-called developed and underdeveloped countries. Centers the lives and struggles of global south communities, contrasting what development means at a theoretical level to fraught realities of how world development systems and interventions impact local populations and environments. Students engage in critical reasoning about international politics and economics and the problematic tendency of looking at the incredibly interconnected planet as a stark division of first and third worlds.
